Sustainable Organic Solutions (SOS) was formed, as a not-for-profit organization, to fill the organics recycling void existing between your dumpster and our community's landfill. SOS roots itself firmly in the necessity of strong community education networks. In cooperation with local for-profit and not-for-profit participants, SOS is working toward the establishment of a sustainable nationwide organics recovery and recycling infrastructure bringing about a reversal of the current damage inflicted upon our environment by the wasteful landfilling of these (resources) resulting in production of greenhouse gasses and toxic contaminants leaching into ground waters. SOS focuses on community education that addresses local landfill and ground water contamination risks and develops regionally based organics recovery and recycling systems that produce environmentally restorative end-products and aid in the stimulation of local economics.

Landfilling of our organics is having devastating effects on our environment. Human activities (landfilling of organics) is adding significant amounts of greenhouse gases to our atmosphere that trap in the Earth's heat, (Global Warming). The gas most associated with global warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. Another major contributor, methane gas is predominantly released from our national landfills during the chemical breakdown of organic materials. Greenhouse gases have very different heat-trapping abilities and some trap more heat than others. One single molecule of methane possesses more than 20 times the heat trapping ability of a single molecule of CO2. (The National Geographic)

SOS utilizes site specific educational programs that inform communities of the multiple environmental benefits and capital gains obtainable through our practices of recycling source separated organics. In addition, those employed in the construction and demolition (C&D) areas of the commercial sector including those involved in design work will receive specific education and information as to the incorporation of organics recovery and recycling approaches that fully support and promote the "Green Building Movement".

SOS's commitment to safe, efficient and effective organics recovery and recycling proves beneficial not only to the environment, but also to our local and national economies. SOS's work will accelerate the development and implementation of a nationwide foodwaste and other source separated organics (OSSO) recovery and recycling infrastructure. Supporting our work will allow SOS to promote the belief that what has long been perceived as organic wastes for landfilling are actually organic resources rich in economic and environmental promise.

Sustainable Organic Solutions's Plan of Action

• Select the most productive areas for infrastructure development considering population, volume of organics being landfilled, current environmental problems and existing or potential composting sites available.
  
  
• Educate the public and commercial sector as to the critical need to establish a sustainable organics recovery and recycling infrastructure through training and the distribution of site specific information: media presentations, workshops, brochures and fact sheets, mailings and website postings.
  
  
• Assess, design and develop educational programs for businesses with large volumes of organics to promote participation inclusive of site guidelines for proper collection of food residuals and other source separated organics (OSSO), acceptable segregation techniques and the establishment of efficient and cost effective collection and transport systems.
  
  
• Assist with the design, development and implementation of a nationwide infrastructure of source separated organics composting facilities. SOS works with both existing and new composting facilities to accomplish this.
  
  
• Develop and enhance recycled organics compost markets to utilize the environmentally restorative end-products in soil replenishment, erosion control and planting areas.
